ART ON WHEELS: THE BMW 8 X JEFF KOONS

Digital art, art in the metaverse and sculptures made with 3D-printers: contemporary artists are enthusiastically incorporating new technological developments. The BMW 8 x Jeff Koons, an ‘art car’ resulting from a collaboration between BMW and the famous American artist, is another striking example of this symbiosis between art and technology. One of only 99 cars delivered worldwide will be presented by during this year’s KunstRAI by BMW & MINI dealer Van-Poelgeest.

The ‘artwork on wheels’ is a special edition of the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé and immediately stands out for its colorful design. The exterior, which combines characteristic elements of pop art with geometric patterns, features eleven colors: the result of more than 200 hours of handwork. The seats come in bright blue and red, a nod to both the pop art universe and the colors of BMW’s department for sports cars (BMW M). What is more, Koons added his signature on the cup holder panel.

‘It is my dream car,’ says Koons. ‘The design is striking and sporty, but at the same time minimalist and conceptual. As the lines in the design make their way from the bonnet to the boot, they widen. This creates the suggestion of speed and energy, which is reinforced by the word “POP!” on the flanks. I can’t wait to drive it.’

The BMW 8 x Jeff Koons is not the first ‘rolling sculpture’ the car manufacturer and the artist have developed together. They first created an art car in 2010, which was showcased at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney also previously designed BMW’s limited edition art cars.

During this year’s KunstRAI, which takes place from 3 to 7 May at RAI Amsterdam’s Europahal, the BMW 8 x Jeff Koons will be shown by Van-Poelgeest.
